Chapter Eight

Dread washed over Dalton. He’d been the one to put that awful pain in Ruby’s eyes. But why? Why was he being a complete jerk? Why was he trivializing what they’d shared? What she truly meant to him? The sledgehammer of truth whacked him over the head. He sucked in a deep breath at what it revealed.

He was scared.

Terrified.

Paralyzed.

The best thing he’d ever had in his life was over.

The text he’d just received told him so.

Deke had neutralized Gascan.

Ruby could go home now. And he could go…well, wherever he wanted. How was he going to leave her? How?

He strode across the room and yanked her to his body. “You don’t hate me, princess.”

“Let me go.” She growled into his chest.

“No. I was wrong. I didn’t mean…”. The heel of her shoe crushed down on his toes. “Ouch!” He dropped to the bed, giving his foot a vigorous rub. His toes throbbed. “I think you broke my toe.”

“Serves you right. When a girl says to let go, you let go!”

Panic had Dalton rushing his words together. “Iwouldneverhurtyou.”

“You already did.” She thrust her chin out.

“I’m sorry.”

“I don’t believe you.”

Dalton racked his brain for something…anything…he could say to get her to believe him. He didn’t want it to end like this. Normally, his grey matter would be able to conjure up the perfect words during a crisis. However, this was not the military. This was his life…his real life. And he’d just thrown a Molotov cocktail into it. What a catastrophe.

As he watched her chin tremble, he committed every ounce of her to memory. Her hair. Her smooth, flawless skin. Those long fingers that had touched every part of his body. And those eyes. Those damn, whiskey-colored eyes that were going to haunt him until the day he died.

The sledgehammer that had whacked him over the head took another wide swing. This time it smashed straight through his chest, cracking through bone, until it sliced through his heart. He jerked, as he waited for it to beat again.

How he wished he’d done things differently.

But this is where he was.

And he had to let her go. She was never meant to be his to begin with. He knew that. He knew it the minute he laid eyes on her. He knew it the minute he walked into her house and told her she was going with him. He knew it the moment he first touched her, tasted her.

He had nothing to offer her.

And a woman like Ruby Graham deserved everything.

“Pack a bag.” He stared at the floor. “I’m taking you home.”
